Kamsky wins the Baku Open

Baku is the capital of oil-rich Azerbaijan and was the venue for a strong open between the 23rd and 31st of August 2010.
Despite a loss to Rauf Mamedov the American top seed Gata Kamsky won the event with 7.5/9.

No change amongst the top three, but Kramnik's poor form has seen him slip behind Aronian into fifth place. Eljanov makes further progress and moves up to sixth by one rating point.
The youngest player in the 2700-club is now Fabiano Caruana who plays for Italy but was born in Miami.

Carlsen downs Anand

Magnus Carlsen has a happy knack of winning when it matters, and so, despite a shaky preliminary phase, it was he who dominated Vishy Anand in the final.
Hammer completed a good final day for the Norwegians in the Arctic Securities tournament by overcoming Polgar in the second game in their battle for the bronze.

The Leko-Gelfand match in Miskolc

Miskolc in Hungary was again the venue for Leko's annual match against an elite opponent.
This year it was Boris Gelfand who went head-to-head against Peter Leko in an eight game rapid match from the 25th to the 29th of August.
Gelfand eventually shading it 4.5-3.5.

Viswanathan Anand coasted into the final scoring 5/6 in the preliminary phase of the Arctic stars tournament. On the other hand his opponent tomorrow, Magnus Carlsen, limped into second place after not winning a single game on Sunday!

Marcote wins Spanish Final

Three wins and three draws saw Escuelo-Kasparov-Mercote defeat Linex-Magic quite comfortably in the final of the 2010 Spanish Honours Division. Vugar Gashimov and Francisco Vallejo Pons were on the top two boards for Mercote throughout.

Linex (Shirov, Ponomariov) beat the Indian-dominated Solvay team on Friday afternoon and thus made the final.
The other semi-finalists Reverte-Albox and Kasparov-Marcote drew 3-3. The latter team go through due to their superior showing in the first four rounds.

The Spanish Honours division has become one of the strongest national leagues in recent years. The format has been simplified into a one-off six-day event, taking place in Sestao (which overlooks Bilbao) in the Spanish Basque country.

Another success this summer for Anton Korobov, this time in Abu Dhabi (UAE) from the 12th to the 20th of August 2010 where he finished ahead of 25 other players on 6.5/9.

The fifth edition of the clash of the generations match took place in Amsterdam from the 12th to the 22nd of August.
Boris Gelfand scored heavily for the 'Experience' team but otherwise his team-mates failed to find any consistent form. The Rising Stars quintet won by the narrow margin of 26 to 24.

The Chinese men were in good form in Yinzhou, China as they were able to comfortably overcome their Russian rivals, Bu Xiangzhi scoring highest.
On the other hand, in the women's part of the match, the Russians were able to keep an edge over their hosts.

Michael Adams demonstrated why he is the leading player from the British Isles as he left everyone in his wake in the 97th British Championships in Canterbury (in Kent in the south of England).
Jovanka Houska was the highest placed female in the 78-player swiss event and was thus awarded the title of British Ladies Champion.

Alongside the 'Young Masters' round robin there was the traditional eleven round 'Masters' swiss in Biel, played from the 19th to the 30th of July.
The top seed finished ahead of the pile, but only just(!) as seven players made their way to equal first on 8/11.
